Benefits of Scientology

We wouldn't think of denying that many Scientologists have seen benefits of membership. The way Scientology works is to target those who they believe are vulnerable; the ill and the depressed. They take them in by offering what seem to be solutions. For some, they achieve results. The fanatical sense of community ("us" versus "them") within the cult and the camaraderie this results in gives the lonely a sense of belonging. This can give them the confidence they need to continue with their lives.

This is a key reason we aren't opposed to Scientologists or their beliefs directly (we do not oppose the free zone). What we see in their beliefs, as incredulous as they may seem to outsiders, is something that helps them and as long as it harms none then it is their right to choose. It's when these beliefs are exploited by the cult's leaders for monetary gain, and when those who come to understand the cult's true nature are subjected to the Fair Game policy, that a harmless cult becomes a despicable abuse of trust.
